Startup #1: University Beyond

Brendan Weinstein (CEO) and Douglas Messer (COO) are the founders of University Beyond -- a recruitment platform that links students and companies together. The two co-founders had their first business endeavor at 16 (amazing!), and are now launching their third company together.

We spoke with Brendan about his experiences with the life as a startup and got some genuine feedback after using Foundersuite, which is -- and I quote -- their favorite tool at the moment.  :)

In just one sentence, what is your company offering/what do you do?

Our goal is to foster important connections between students and professional organizations for the purpose of networking and participation in valuable campus ambassadorship programs.

What is the one thing you love the most about running a startup?

Collaboration. The fact that everyone is working in the same project with the same goal, and with different areas of responsibilities. The entire workforce as well as student value is shifting to a collaborative workspace. Collaboratively you share open information throughout the company and in that way everyone has a much better way of succeeding.

Do you have a success story (big or small) you would like to share?

We were featured in 914inc Westchester Magazine, and won the award for Westchester Wunderkinds in 2014. Being the first candidate for Startup of the Week is also an accomplishment. :)

How, if in any way, has Foundersuite helped your company?

We have many of the different documents already, but in Foundersuite they’re sorted by categories and are featured within the different tools. This makes it easier for us to get a better overview of what exact document to use at that given time. As well as the fact that my co-founder and I have skillsets that lie separately, so he and I both have documents to use for our separate business activities within Foundersuite -- this helps us tremendously. The tools also tell us which documents will be needed for the next step, and guides us in the right direction. Knowing which documents to approach, also gives us an early head start, making sure we always stay on top of our work.

Finally, what is your best tip for running a startup?

However hard you think you have to work, work ten times harder -- and even harder than that. Hard work, devotion and surrounding yourself with the right people are key aspects in running a startup.

We would like to give a big thanks to the boys behind University Beyond; good luck and rock on!
